4 Communities by Communities

The work of 4 Communities By Communities includes efforts of 4 Communities – HPV, 4 Mothers & Babies (4MB), and Change Academy. These sub-programs are focused on raising both awareness and vaccine uptake of two cancer-preventing vaccinations: the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to prevent cervical cancer and the Hepatitis B (HBV) vaccine to prevent liver cancer. In partnership with colleagues from the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the 4CBYC team invites Nigerians to participate in crowdsourcing events to share innovative solutions to address vaccine uptake in their communities. By working within a comprehensive implementation science partnership framework, we can provide diverse and strong mentorship from leading experts across the field to the participants as they advance to later phases of each contest.

Listening to the voices and ideas of each individual or group who shares a solution is inspiring and reminds us just how important cancer prevention is, and learning from these same individuals and groups allows for confidence in the appropriateness and sustainability of the interventions that are not just created for a community, but created with the community in which they become implemented. By taking this approach, the participants have the potential to drive real change and improvement in the moment but are also being prepared for future impact as they are being trained as the next generation of Nigerian implementation science researchers.
